Local photographer Ryan Tischer took a recent trip to the Southwest and came back with some spectacular images. The classic locations he visited produced many iconic and timeless images. The image above was taken at Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River in northern Arizona. “I stood with my camera lingering over a nearly 1000 foot drop while desert sand flew up from the canyon below, stinging my face as a dust storm brewed on the horizon,” Tischer said. “I returned to camp to find my tent poles broken and sleeping bag filled with sand.” But, according to Tischer, the experience was more than worthwhile as the conditions were near perfect for this image. The image was captured using a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 16-35mm L series lens at 16mm with two exposures, f22 at 1/16 second for the sky and f22 at1/4 second for the foreground. A circular polarizer was also used. The two exposures were merged manually in Phoshop CS4 merging layers and did not use any HDR software.
